joining morethat oneclub?
Posted by Francis from Somers, MT, US on March 16, 2009

can a member belong to more than one club? I live ina community between two clubs and sometimes we wouldlike to go to the one that is

more conveient than traveling totheother one

Do you mean more than one club of a multi-club chain? If so, most chain operations have an option to buy a membership that entitles you to use all clubs in the chain? Or do you mean can you join one independently-owned club yet use another club that is owned independently by someone else? If so, I have never seen that in my 33 years in this industry. If you want to use two differently-owned clubs, you have to buy a membership at each.

Computerized Nutrition Prggrams
Posted by Mary from Macon, GA, US on February 3, 2009

I am a personal trainer working with figure competitors, triathletes, and bodybuilders. I am interested in purchasing a computerized nutrition program where I can plug in the individuals goals and have a meal plan printout of what they have to eat in order to obtain the desired results. Do you have any suggestions on which programs are best?

There are literally dozens. To single one out I believe would be frivolous on my part. The place to start is by checking the advertisers sections of magazines such as Club Industry's Fitness Business Pro, IHRSA's CBI, National Fitness Trade Journal and Fitness Management, among others. Next is to check each mag's web sites. Finally, I would Google search for specifically what you want and it is likely you will come up with several pages of possibilities, most of which will offer you free demos.

My weakness
Posted by tera from sweet home, OR, US on October 3, 2008

Hi, my name is Tera and I am a personal trainer.

My question is when I get a potential client how in the world do I close the deal ?

I get really uncomfortable at the end of my consultation appointments for some reason and i know that they know.

Sounds like you are uncomfortable asking for money.

First off, it's not a "deal" you're seeking, it's the "building of a relationship of trust" with a human being. They have to trust that you can help them to succeed at what they want in regards to their personal wellness objectives...you have to trust that you're worth spending money with to do that.

Sounds like you could use some basic sales training...how to ask for the order, how to get over the fear of rejection, how to value yourself and what you have to offer to people with your personal training programs.

Does the club you work at do sales training with their membership staff? If so, ask to participate in it. If not, seek out people like Thomas Plummer, Casey Conrad, Karen Woodard-Chavez, each of whom do sales seminars and some of them do regional seminars as well. I also recommend a wonderful book called "Selling With Integrity" by Sharon Drew Morgen (available on www.amazon.com).

Money is simply the exchange someone makes to someone else for a valued service. You have to first believe that your service is valuable. As a mentor of mine coached me a long time ago: "Just ask. You'll be surprised at how many people say 'yes.'"

The future of music license?
Posted by stan from rogersville, TN, US on September 2, 2008

There is much concern about the increased music license prices that appears on the horizon. What looks like a negative is actually creating a positive. As the music industry becomes greedy and tries to gouge restaurants, health clubs, night clubs and the many other venues that have the audience, they have forgotten a key point.

That is where the masses are listening and instead of charging for a right to play their music, they should be paying to allow it to be paid in those venues.

Some brilliant minds are noticing this and with the creation of satelite TV and radio, it would not be so hard to purchase a satelite radio station that only plays artist music that want it to be heard and no license required. Cable tv stations that have programing that does not have a requirement.

Can you imagine what would happen if all restaurants, health clubs, night clubs told the music license companies, pay us or we will not play your music.

The increased prices that the music license company are charging is making restaurants, health clubs, night clubs, airport’s playing TVs, etc…. realize that they need us, worse than we need them.

Watch and see what is coming in the future, as there is a gold mine for the entrepreneurs that see what appeared as a negative turn into a positive.

In the future as these satelite stations become available who needs who will be realized.

There is much conjecture on this issue, notably a Canadian government initiative to not only tax group exercise classes but to allow fees on music rights. This matter has come up before in our industry and we have always managed to defeat it. I think the author of this question has some good points (”satellite stations”, etc.) but personally I’m not sure which way this will go. - MSS

Aphelion
Posted by Shannon from Altoona, IA, US on July 29, 2008

Does Aphelion have a childcare check-in system?

"Aphelion" is now CheckFree. Almost all club management software packages (including Conexion, which has a cool "family photo" section in the membership database) can be configured to child care check in capabilities.
